ADHD - Regular Rejuvenation of Your Child's Body With Massages
Experts endorse the positive impact of non-medication intervention strategies, such as massage therapy for AD-DH children.
The use of massages has been time-tested to be beneficial for relaxation, detoxification and rejuvenation.
A study conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami found adolescent boys who received 10-15 minute daily massages were observed by their teachers to be more focused on their schoolwork.
The children also said that they felt happier as a result of receiving these massages.
Another study involving girls showed immediate improvement in their moods, and longer-term behavioral improvement in the classroom.
Again, the girls spoke of feeling happier.
Gentle massage strokes are applied and children remain fully clothed.
As a parent, you can learn to do simple massage techniques to apply between professional massage sessions.
By doing this, you are:
giving your child much needed physical contact
helping to calm his/her nervous system
creating a stronger emotional bond between you and your child.
The results on AD-HD children, who underwent massages, as recorded by experts Field, Quintino, Hermandez-Reif & Koslovsky8, 1998 and Field, Morrow, Valdeon, Larson, Kuhn & Schanberg, 1992, are listed below.
They are:
 less fidgety
 better on task
 display conduct and behaviour
 less hyperactivity
 less prone to depression
 Less anxious
showing a decrease in salivary and urinary cortisol level that indicates decrease of stress
 more cooperative and relaxed
waking less at night and have increased sleep overall
 improving in psychological functioning
 exhibiting age-appropriate ability to focus
 feeling and behaving calmer
 displaying increased confidence
obtaining better results with school work
interacting better with peers and teachers
To be considered
Toxins, such as heavy metals, accumulate in the bones, while organic pollutants gather in the fatty tissues.
As these are chemically based, their release may not occur as a result of the mechanical actions of massage.
It is the circulatory system and the lymphatic system which are largely responsible for this task.
Massage does however, assist in returning the body to a homeostatic state, ie an internal environment that is in a balanced and optimum state.
The nauseous and 'off-colour' feeling experienced by some people after a massage, may be due to the body returning to homeostasis.
A program has been successfully introduced into New South Wales schools (Australia) that has taught children to self-massage and massage each other on the back as part of a classroom technique to calm down hyperactive children.
