Personality Disorders - 7 Signs Someone You Love May Be Afflicted

We all know people who seem "off".They may be friends, coworkers, even family members or spouses. If someone in your life seems to hurt you frequently and you simply don't understand how or why that person can think or behave that way, it is possible that there may be a personality disorder present. Most of us have heard of some of these disorders, and a few of them -- psychopathy, sociopathy, and narcissism, are some of the most destructive in relationships. While only a mental health professional can diagnose a personality disorder, given that an estimated 4-10% of the general population has a personality disorder, it is helpful to know what traits these individuals exhibit. Here are 7 signs someone you love may have a personality disorder:

1. The person lacks genuine empathy. There may be a show of feelings and empathy, but it is more a parroting of an observed, acceptable societal response than a true reaction.

2. The individual has a sense of entitlement and expects preferential treatment. They may also feel it is appropriate for them to associate strictly with higher status or "special" individuals. They may behave disdainfully toward others.

3. Grandiose self worth. The person may exaggerate achievements or feel superior, without a supporting level of accomplishment.

4. Poor impulse control, risk taking behaviors, and sexual compulsiveness. The person may have difficulty planning ahead for consequences of behavior. They may become bored easily and crave the excitement which comes with risk. Sexually compulsive or "dangerous" behaviors are common manifestations of these characteristics.

5. There is an inability to commit or follow through on responsibilities, including job and family commitments.Bills may go unpaid and job performance may be erratic or unsuccessful. An individual with a personality disorder may be a classic con artist, and live off of others.

6. Manipulation, conning, and compulsive lying. If you love someone with this trait, it is truly crazy making. The individual may lie about everything, large and small, significant and less significant.

7. The person lacks genuine remorse for wrongdoing.Again, the individual may display a show of emotion and express guilt, but it is really a hollow theatrical presentation. If you are around someone with a personality disorder long enough, and are close enough, you will begin to see the cracks in their faade of normalcy.
